Special attention devoted to the conversation edited by Santanu Das in The Cambridge Companion to the Poetry of the First World War - (cf this Seminar's Programme ).

Discussing some of the questions addressed in Luísa Maria Flora's essay published in Etudes Brittaniques Contemporaines (2008) - (cf this Seminar's Programme).

Introducing the Programme of the Seminar, its goals and criteria.
Revisiting the objectives as laid out in the seminar's Abstract.
The issues of the representation of war as addressed in both texts from the period of the Great War (fictions of 1918, 1919 and 1922) and more recent approaches (in 1991, 1995, 2009 and 2014).Issues of heroism and issues of its literary representation.

A few poems of the First World War were read to the students as a brief Introductory approach to next week's Seminar.
