21 Outubro 2025, 17:00 Chiara Nifosi

Introduction and discussion of Calinescu's text on the idea of the avant-garde: modernity and the avant-garde; the history of a military metaphor: its use in political discourse (utopian socialism) and then its critical reassessment in the field of aesthetics (e.g., Baudelaire's mistrust); the primacy of the aesthetic connotation of the avant-garde in early 20th-century discourse and the subordination of the political impact of the trope. The main features of avant-garde culture: revolutionary ethos, negative element, temporality and vision of history, leadership, vision of tradition as oppressive, anti-conformism, its internal contradictions and the crisis of the avant-garde (1960s, postmodernism).
