3.     Examining image icons and discussing the historical and social context from which they emerged and gained meaning.

4.     Comparing the treatment of the same subject matter in painting and photography.

1.     Read the extract from Roland Barthes’ Camera Lucida and (i) summarise Barthes’ theory of photographic meaning; and ii) distinguish the terms studium and punctum.

2.     Bring one or two images to class that illustrate these two ways of being affected by a photograph.
