Some fundamental questions concerning language. Innatism and alternative hypotheses. Language universals. Topics in language acquisition, including the notion of statistical learning, the role of imitation and teaching in language development, some examples of how research on language can be conducted with babies. General notion of mental lexicon and the nuclear components of grammar. (Topics to be further explored in next class.)
