Programa (na língua de ensino) | Course description (in language of instruction)

The course will consider the main questions about the notion of literature and the most relevant models of literary reading in the Western tradition. The conceptual discussion, centered on the problem of fiction and the relationship between literature and reality, will be raised by the study of a heterogeneous set of literary and critical texts, which include namely:

- theoretical works from the Antiquity and the Romanticism (Plato, Aristotle, Horace, P.B. Shelley);

- poems from different authors and periods (anthology available at the beginning of the semester);

- the play Sei personaggi in cerca d'autore [Six Characters in Search of an Author], by Luigi Pirandello;

- the short-stories Ficciones [Fictions], by Jorge Luis Borges.

Avaliação (na língua de ensino) | Grading and Assessment (in language of instruction)

The course works on a continuous assessment basis, in accordance with the FLUL Student Assessment Regulation. The final classification results from the weighted average of three mandatory elements:  two on-site written exercises and one written report on a chosen class.

Oral participation of students during classes and their engagement in critical discussions is also highly valued.
