Began Aura Xilonen’s Campeón gabacho / The Gringo Champion, which we read in translation. First class focused on the linguistic inventiveness of this novel, which is written in an esoteric blend of Golden Age Spanish, contemporary Mexican Spanish, border “Spanglish,” and various anglicisms Its translation is a major challenge, and we spent much of today’s class reviewing the Spanish original and the translation of the novel’s first paragraph to assess the choices made by the translator.
