Today we focused on the novel’s depiction of the violence of the life of the central immigrant protagonist, as well as the dangerous process of illegal migration across the Rio Grande, which is depicted in lengthy and harrowing detail. Students were asked to consider the novel in light of the controversy around a border wall and the notion of American identity that a border wall communicates.
