The difference in the structure of Baudelaire's salons of 1845 and 1846, with the second one organized in thematic chapters that follow an argumentative pattern. The central role of colorists and Eugène Delacroix as the most representative Romantic painter. The definition of Romanticism and its connection to modernity. The role of memory. Temperament, technique and naïveté.

Content of the class: Baudelaire's biography, general remarks on hid dualistic conception of human life and the opposition between spleen and idéal; metaphysics vs. moral.
We read the poem "L'irrémédiable" from Les Fleurs du Mal; quote from a letter to Narcisse Ancelle; quote from Mon coeur mis à nu (see handout). Degradation / déchéance: from the metaphysical dimension to political commentary.
