Research ethics and conflict management in academic context
16 Dezembro 2020, 15:00 • Marta Pacheco Pinto
This session was divided into three parts. In the first part, the group commented on the roundtable on career pathways that had taken place in the previous session. The second part was on research ethics and promotion of research integrity. The topics covered included plagiarism, self-plagiarism and conflict of interest, as well as human research and data protection (informed consent). Karen Bennett’s short essay on “Plagiarism reassessed” (2011) was also discussed. Students were introduced to the code of conduct and good practice of the University of Lisbon and informed of the existence of an internal Commission for Research Ethics at the School of Arts and Humanities (https://www.letras.ulisboa.pt/pt/investigacao/comissao-de-etica-para-a-investigacao). The third part was about interpersonal conflict management in academic context. The group discussed ideas on how to deal with conflict when working in the academy based on their own experience and in connection with the article “Resolving conflicts in institutions of higher education: challenges for pracademics” (Maria R. Volpe and David Chandler, 1999). At the very end, students were asked to fill in (at home) an online seminar evaluation survey created by the instructor.
