Learning outcomes of the curricular unit
Characterizing the economic and social realities produced during the 19th century; Understanding the elements of continuity and rupture in the 20th century; identifying the general trends on post II World War economic growth; Explaining the causes and consequences of the economic turn in the 70s and its impact on the social structure.

I O Século XIX; O advento das sociedades industrializadas; o crescimento económico; as vagas de industrialização e áreas de influência (in)directa; o sistema monetário e comercial; a procura de novos mercados e os choques entre potências; as resistências sociais à industrialização; o surgimento do operariado e novas formas de organização social; o desenvolvimento urbano; os fluxos migratórios;
II O Século XX; a evolução económica e social no período entre guerras; as concepções autoritárias e totalitárias; a II Guerra Mundial e a reconstrução; a Guerra Fria; o Estado, a prosperidade económica e o bem-estar social; as causas e as consequências dos choques petrolíferos.
Syllabus
I The 19th Century; The emergence of industrialized societies; the economic growth; the wages of industrialization and the areas of influence; the monetary and commercial system; the quest for new markets and the confrontation between powers; the social resilience to the industrialization; the emerge of the working-class and new forms of social organization; the urban development; the migrant movements;
II The 20th Century; the economic and social evolution during the interwar period; the totalitarian and dictatorship conceptions; the II World War and the reconstruction; The Cold War; the state, the economic prosperity and social welfare; the causes and consequences of the oil crisis in the 70s.
Demonstração da coerência dos conteúdos programáticos com os objectivos de aprendizagem da unidade curricular
Os conteúdos programáticos foram concebidos para corresponder às necessidades de aprendizagem dos estudantes quanto às tendências gerais, mas também à compreensão das especificidades do período contemporâneo (sécs XIX e XX) nos domínios económico e social. Por esse motivo, sublinha-se a emergência das sociedades industrializadas e a sua complexidade, com reflexos na projecção europeia no Novo Mundo e nos continentes africano e asiático. Por outro lado, enfatiza-se as características essenciais do séc. XX, associadas à I Guerra Mundial, às dificuldades do sistema liberal e ao surgimento de novas formas de organização económica e social, vigentes no período entre guerras. Por último, traçam-se as linhas gerais do desenvolvimento no pós II Guerra Mundial, tendo em conta as causas e consequências das crises petrolíferas.
Demonstration of the syllabus coherence with the curricular unit's objectives
The syllabus was conceived to satisfy the needs of the students regarding the trends but also the comprehension of the 19th and 20th century specificities, in the economic and social issues. For that reason, it’s noted the emergence of industrialized societies and its complexity, with impact on the European projection in the New World and on the African and Asian continents. On the other hand, it’s emphasized the essential characteristics of the 20th century, associated to the First War, the difficulties of the liberal system and the appearance of new forms of economic and social organization, during the interwar period. At last, it’s given the main elements on growth post II World War, view the causes and the consequences of the oil crisis in the 70s.
Metodologias de ensino (avaliação incluída)
As metodologias de ensino adoptadas combinam a exposição teórica para dar aos estudantes as linhas principais das matérias tratadas, a análise de fontes históricas e o debate promovido sobre as leituras dos estudantes (orientadas pelo professor).
Realização de uma prova de avaliação e de um trabalho de investigação; apresentação oral das conclusões.
Teaching methodologies (including evaluation)
The teaching methodologies adopted are a mixed combination between the teacher’s lecture, for providing students with the guidelines on the issues been treated, the analysis of historic sources and the debate promoted on the student’s readings (oriented by the teacher).
The evaluation is based in three key moments: an assessment and an investigation project which the students should submit in paper and in class.

As metodologias de ensino adoptadas pretendem corresponder aos objectivos de aprendizagem selecionados. Considera-se crucial o cruzamento entre a exposição teórica de conhecimentos e o trabalho desenvolvido pelos estudantes, nas leituras recomendadas, nos debates nas aulas, ou ainda na aquisição de experiência no contacto e trabalho de análise crítica das fontes históricas.
Demonstration of the coherence between the teaching methodologies and the learning outcomes
The teaching methodologies adopted aim to satisfy the learning outcomes selected. It’s considered crucial the encounter between the theoretical exposition in class and the students’ work on selected readings, on debates promoted in class or on the experience in handling critical analysis of historical sources.
