A UC visa o diálogo com textos culturais de índole vária (literários, históricos, visuais, multimédia) subjacentes à formação e afirmação da(s) identidade(s) dos EUA. Pretende-se uma perspetiva abrangente e uma produção crítica adaptada aos interesses dos alunos sobre os seguintes períodos e temas dominantes da História dos EUA: era pré-colonial, período colonial e puritanismo; pensamento iluminista e independência; populações autóctones, expansão territorial e fronteira; imigração e escravatura; Guerra Civil; industrialização e “Gilded Age”. Instar-se-á a que o olhar retrospetivo ilumine a consciência sobre estar no presente e avaliar os caminhos possíveis. |
