As representações da época e da historiografia. Os argumentos: "Estado" versus privados; monarquias comerciais versus impérios terrestres; mercantilismo versus capitalismo. A sobrevivência de leituras providencialistas. Continuidades e inovações; a questão da exemplaridade dos impérios ibéricos.
