In addition to exploring the conventions of academic writing in general, the course will focus primarily on the language and structures involved in the writing of an academic paper. The following areas of study will be explored:

 

Developing criticality

Organisation, structure and cohesion

Academic language

Paraphrasing and summarising

Listening and note-taking

Referencing and in-text citations

Writing a literature review

Writing an abstract

Writing an academic paper

 

 

*Devices (laptops) should be brought to classes whenever possible.  Students will be assessed on their understanding and assimilation of the skills required to meet advanced academic writing and speaking standards, in the four core areas of reading, writing, speaking and listening.

 

Assessment Criteria

 Assessment will include:

- a summary based on students' own notes taken from listening to an authentic lecture in a university context,

- an oral presentation on the structure/content of an academic paper

- a short academic paper. (3000-4000 words).

*PLEASE NOTE

With the exception of worker students and those who present valid certificates to justify their absence, all the assessment elements MUST be accomplished for students to pass this course.
