Examination Instructions 

Procedures of the June examination: The June exam will be in two parts: an oral written examination at class time on Monday June 1st (preassigned 15m slots, from 4-6pm), and an oral examination on Wednesday June 3rd from 4-6 pm.

Students will have to do both examinations as they have equal weight.

 

Oral Examination

The oral examination will have a duration of 15 minutes.

Structure of the oral examination: will be divided into 2 parts (each referring to the respective section in our Student’s Course Book [SCB]): Creative Writing ‘Theory’ (pp.1-42, worth 30%), Stories (pp.42-114, worth 70%).

Students will be expected to answer reflective questions on the materials discussed during the semester. Therefore, they will have to quote both from the theoretical texts and literary texts analysed.

Procedures for the oral examination: students will be sent a Zoom link and the specific time slot for their oral examination on the morning of the examination. They must log into the Zoom room with cameras turned on throughout the examination. Moreover, students who have not attended class regularly must show a photo ID with a recent photo so that I can verify student identification before the examination begins.

 

Written Examination

Structure of the written examination: will be divided into 2 parts:

1) You must write a comparison/contrast essay (see SCB p.163 on) of about 400 words, comparing two of the short stories in the SCB on a specific ‘narrative element’ (SCB p.2), theme or topic. (The 2 stories you need to compare and contrast will be chosen by me from any of the stories in SCB pp.42-114, and will only be divulged in the exam instructions);

2) You must also write a flash fiction story, responding to a prompt in the exam, of about 400 words. As pertains to flash fiction, and as practiced throughout the semester, your writing must exhibit a concern with ‘compression’ and ‘showing’ as opposed to ‘telling’.

You may consult the SCB during the exam but be wary: this is an exam situation. The SCB is just for you to refresh your memory and, above all, synthetically quote specific parts to illustrate your line of argumentation. Time management is of the essence. You need to come into the exam with a comprehensive understanding of all of the materials in the SCB, and reveal critical insight of the short stories.

Once, I have verified all candidates’ IDs I will send the written examination to students’ official email.

The written examination will have a duration of 120 minutes with 5 minutes tolerance. Students will submit their finished examination to my email bpalmeirim@campus.ul.pt. All written examinations will be run through a plagiarism software before correction – any examination that is identified as having plagiarised material will not be evaluated and will be reported to Conselho Pedagógico.

Point of view in paintings and poems. 
Discussing Ucello's "Saint George and the Dragon" and Fanthorpe's poem "Not my best side"

A final meeting  to provide final assessment was scheduled for 20th May starting at 8:15h .
Exam date and structure 
The Creative Writing Exam will be held on the 1st of June during class hours (8:00h-10:00h). Students will receive their paper and an answer sheet template at 8:00h and will have to send their answer sheet  by email to mcabrita1@campus.ul.pt  at 10 o'clock. 
Students are reminded that they must enroll for the exam with the Academic Services and are asked to email the teacher by 29th May to say they will be sitting the exam on 1st June.
The exam will focus on all teaching materials included in the Workbook and on everything discussed in class. 
It will be divided into two parts: a) part I is a prompt-based creative writing exercise; b) part II is an essay writing exercise in which students will have to use their knowledge of literary writing techniques and theory to give their opinion on a statement and illustrate their opinion with examples from the teaching materials discussed in class. Each part carries 10/20 points.
