Checking the answers to a vocabulary-expansion exercise based on vocabulary from READING MATTERS TEXTS 5-11.
Editorials continued: (a) analysing the structure and style of an evidence-based editorial based on TEXT 13: "Race and marijuana arrests" (New York Times) and TEXT 14: "Prison works ..." (The Independent) continued: opinion stated; reasons stated to support this opinion; facts that support this opinion; author's suggestions for dealing with the topic of the editorial.
(b) "Start with power and finish with purpose": looking at beginnings and endings of various editorials from British and American papers sent by email (strongly worded opinions and calls to action).
(c) Four main types of editorials: persuasive; analysis and explanatory; obituary; endorsement.
(d) differences between an editorial and an opinion essay.There will be one last class about editorials on Tuesday (10th November).HOMEWORK for Monday's Zoom class: instructions sent by email.
