The general theme for the course is rhetoric according to Aristotle, with the objective of developing a critical sense of language and oral and written production that is informative and persuasive. The programme includes theory on rhetoric and historical and fictional speeches to ensure a variety of exposure to different techniques and examples of rhetoric, and promote familiarization with speech writing technique. Some of this work is done independently and students can choose an area of study. The programme also includes incremental exercises to develop skills to write and deliver a speech in public in a persuasive manner.

The resources necessary for the course are the coursebook (available ffrom Reprografia Vermelha) and access to a shared drive (contact the teacher).
Students are expected to fulfill an extra hour of individual study a week, for which will be assigned extra work.
Homework for next class: watch the following speeches and be
prepared to comment on them and their effectivenerss, technique, appeal,
clarity and any other issues you find relevant. Read the first chapter
of the coursebook (up to page 15).
