Discussion of photography

8 Novembro 2017, 16:00 Cecília Maria Beecher Martins

Students presented examples of photographs from The Ideal for Living exhibition and discussed if/how these were a representation of British society as it was developing over the 20th century. Art as a reflection of society.

They also presented examples of "artistic" photography and photojournalism.
We discussed how photographers like Emil Otto Hoppé, Billy Brandt and Henri Cartier-Bresson laid the foundations for photojournalism as they moved into this new field.

We also looked at photographs that "stop the world" and asked how some photos achieved this, while others which are equally shocking do not.

Finally we looked at the "montage" involved in developing propaganda photography.
