AIMS
In line with the CEFR descriptors, students of C1.2. level are expected to be able to understand a wide range of demanding texts and recognise implicit meaning. They should be able to express themselves fluently and spontaneously and use language flexibly and effectively for social, academic and professional purposes. Students should also be capable of producing clear, well-structured, detailed text on complex subjects, showing controlled use of organisational patterns, connectors and cohesive devices.
SYLLABUS OVERVIEW
Essay writing
Students will build on the knowledge acquired in C1.1 to further develop their essay writing skills. In this course unit, students will learn more about the conventions of academic writing and how to construct a literature review.
Debates
Based on the Oxford-Union style, students will consolidate the knowledge acquired in C1.1 to further develop their oral skills and critical awareness by participating in controlled class debates. At this more advanced level, greater emphasis will be placed on vocabulary expansion, register, more complex language structures and fluency.
Literature review
Students will be introduced to an additional section of the academic essay, namely the literature review.
STUDY MATERIALS
All the course materials will be uploaded onto Moodle. The teacher will inform the students of the material required for each class as the course progresses.
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
· Essay: 40%
· Debate: 30%
· Literature review: 20%
· Attendance and class participation: 10%
REQUIREMENTS
Having successfully English Proficiency (C1.1) or having been placed in English Advanced Proficiency (C1.2) as a result of a placement test done at the beginning of the academic year.
