Use of English

Discussion of how terms can be taken from one area in English and applied in a totally different one, when the meaning that is inherent in the first usage applies to the second. Illustration of the point with the example of the transfer of the term "backstop" from sport (cricket & baseball) to politics (the backstop in the EU-UK's negotiation of the Brexit terms.

Also within this context we looked at how words can minimise events (i.e.the Troubles in Northern Ireland sounds a lot less serious than guerilla warfare).

Corrected and discussed the correction of the Reading Comp exercise students had to do for this class.
Then did practice exercises with linking words (p27 manual) and used to verb vs used to adj (29).

Students need to finish the exercises on p 29 for next class and do the gap fill exercise on prepositions on p28 for next class.
They also need to select the text they wish to discuss for 12th Feb.
