Purpose and function of thesis statments:•is one of the greatest unifying aspects of an essay.  •It holds  the various bricks of the essay together,  •summarizing the main point of the paper "in a nutshell,"  •and pointing toward the paper's development.  •to do this, the thesis statement must have two parts.  •these can be two phrases in one sentence or  two sentences.

Writing a thesis is a first step in the writing process, remember that you may need to tweak this when you have finished because your main idea has changed, but it is a good place to start your writing from even if you have to move away a little from the initial claim because of new evidence found through your research.

The thesis suggests an order or direction for the essay's development.

We read Judy Syfer's essay "I want a wife" to show how a literary text could be used to support a thesis ideas (which is what they will be doing with Walter Mitty.

A possible thesis statement could be:  "While, Judy Syfers’ essay "I Want a Wife" humorously exaggerates the marital expectations facing women in our society today, it also draws our attention to how, still today, women can be expected to integrate multiple roles include managing a household, a career, and having a good relationship with a spouse, while the spouse can just concentrate on one thing." because it says what you are going to do and how you will do it.

We then did exercises with bad thesis statements which students worked on to improve and they then worked on their own - either revising it or writing it for the first time.

We also did a free writing exercise to show how this could help getting original ideas for the essay.

Students must submit their essay on the theme "Walter Mitty and the USA" on Monday 16th Oct.
