Presentation by the students of the first ideas about individual assignments to be handed in at the end of March. Each student presents during 15 minutes her or his personal analysis of the mechanisms behind a given film and literature adaptation, with feedback by teacher and classroom discussion. The key part of the analysis has to focus on issues of medium and medium specificity.

In-depth discussion of two cases of intermedial adaptation: first, the adaptation chain of Marguerite Duras's 'Moderato Cantabile' (book, movie, film photo novel) and, second,  Chris Marker's 'The Jetty' (movie and film photo novel). The students had watched and read all this material and had to report on their work by trying to examine the respective roles of media automatisms and individual creative impact of the makers.

History and poetics of three other formats or genres: the drawn novel, the photo novel and the film photo novel, with a special emphasis on the automatism changes between the different media. Close-reading of selected pages of each medium and discussion on the way the media automatisms reshape basic concepts of storytelling as well as reading and contextualization of the media in the French and Italian context.

History and poetics of the novelization as a genre as well as automatism and study of its main features in comparison with other forms of film in print. Differences and similarities between novelization and film-novel. Study of the role of images in verbal novelizations and the role of material book culture in the evolution of the genre. Close reading of a case study, 'Les Vacances de M. Hulot', in the historical context of the transition from French Quality to New Wave.

Theoretical approach of the notions of medium and medium specificity, with a special emphasis on the medium theory by Stanley Cavell and the differences between media theory and medium theory. Presentation of the notin of autotism and its impact on the internal and external structure of a medium. Presentation of related concepts such as remediation and transmedium storytelling.
