India sought to follow an independent multilateral foreign policy in the first 4 decades of its independence. Forging amicable relationship with countries of the world without taking sides. Modernize not Westernize became the byword in India’s foreign policy. Non-willingness to join the Eastern Bloc or Western Bloc in the Cold War era. The core policy of NAM was that India was never permanently pro-west or pro-east.
Ex-colonial countries respond to history—by treating it as a collective trauma. As a result they have a strong sense of victimization that affects their foreign policy decisions even today (Chatterjee Miller, 2013).
