'Me Talk Pretty One Day' and Expository Writing - Part 1

20 Abril 2017, 10:00 Hilda Alexandra Prazeres Eusebio

It was confirmed - unsurprisingly - that only 2 or 3 students have actually read David Sedaris' book Me Talk Pretty One Day.  The teacher has no wish to spend the following lessons talking about a book no one has read, as her English is already awesome and requires no practice.  So, in light of this, the teacher began the expository writing unit as students will be carrying out an expository presentation, in a group, on a short story of their choice from the book.

Here's how it's going to roll:

  • Each group will present one short story from the book.
  • Each group will be made up of 2-3 people.
  • Each presentation will include a PPT to be used as a visual aid.
  • Each presentation will include the following:
    • a brief list of the themes identified in the short story.
    • a list of all unfamilliar vocabulary and expressions with corresponding definitions/meanings:
      • this must include the different variations/meanings of individual words,
      • sample sentences that will better illustrate to the class the real meanings of the words
    • summary of the short story
    • analysis of the same
    • a review
  • Each individual person must speak for a minimum of 5 minutes and a maximum of 10.
  • These presentations will be carried out on the 9th, 11th, 16th and 18th of May.
Those who did not come to class today must choose a partner to work with and a short story.  The stories which HAVE NOT YET been chosen (and therefore from which they can choose) are:
  • A Shiner Like a Diamond
  • Jesus Shaves
  • The Tapeworm Is In
  • Make That a Double
  • Remembering My Childhood on the Continent of Africa
  • I Pledge Allegiance to the Bag
  • Picka Pocketoni
  • Smart Guy
  • The Late Show
  • I'll Eat What He's Wearing

The Rules

These presentations are for students to have one last chance to practice for their oral exam.  Therefore, they MUST NOT READ their presentations to the class but use the bullet points on the PPT as a guide.

Next Class

The teacher will be modelling one of these presentations herself next class - the short story she will be presenting is Me Talk Pretty One Day (the short story after which the book is named).
