Discussion of the short story "The Guilt" by Rayda Jacobs:  answering the reading comprehension questions about the short story in writing (page 68 of the Workbook; questions pasted below).


1. On the first page of the story the reader meets the main characters. Who are they?

2. What do you learn about the story’s political and social background?

3. How did Lilian Thurgood’s previous experience with beggars who came knocking on her door affect her? Justify your answer by referring to the text.

4. Comment on the power relations between blacks and whites in this story.

5. What other feelings and thoughts fill Mrs Thurgood’s heart and mind?

6. Is there a turning point in the story? Justify your answer.

7. In light of what you know about South Africa’s history, comment on the following excerpts from the short story:

  • They took merciless advantage, especially since the new government. There was a boldness not seen before. (lines 39-40)
