Writing an essay based on Mandela's quote "To be free is not merely to cast off one's chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others" - feedback on students' outlines of the essay.Modern-day India:  reading and discussion of the poem "Khwab" by Michael Hyde.

(a) Read the short story "Good advice is rarer than rubies" by Salman Rushdie (the story will be discussed next class).(

b)  Writing assignment: a 5-paragraph essay based on a quote - instructions below.

 Mandela is quoted saying, 

"To be free is not merely to cast off one's chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others." 

Write an essay using this quote as a starting point. Discuss the underlying meaning of this quotation and how it relates to you and to today’s society.

Write about 250 words. You may use the pronoun “I”, i.e. write in the first person.

This essay is due on Thursday, 22nd April 2021.
