Information on the B2.2 Final Exam

The TP 3 (9.30am class) exam will be on Monday 11th January between 9.30 and 11 am in Room 10.2.

The TP 4 (11.00am class) exam will be on Wednesday 13th January between 11.00 and 12.30pm in Room 5.1.

You will have to do two pieces of writing based on texts in our anthology, “Limitations?” If you don't have a copy, ask me as soon as possible. I can send you a pdf. In the exam, you can use “Limitations?” and a good English-English dictionary.

The first piece will be an essay, in which you will have to discuss Sarah Kay’s Commencement Address and Shane Koyczan’s “Visiting Hours” in terms of a particular theme. I will give you the theme on the exam paper.

There will be no minimum or maximum number of words. It is worth 50%.

The second piece will be creative writing based on Dean Furness’ TED Talk. In the talk, he tells his own story, of course. In the exam, you will have to tell the reader about these same events, again in a 1^st person narrative, but from the perspective of one of the people Dean Furness mentions in his talk. I will tell you which person you must ‘be’ on the exam paper. You will, therefore, have to use your imagination and be creative based on what Furness tells us about ‘your’ character. So, for example, you might start your text, “When Dean had his accident, I felt so sorry for him.”

Again, there will be no minimum or maximum number of words. It is worth 50%.

As you see, each piece of writing is worth 50%. So it’s essential that you organise yourself in the exam and give them an equal amount of time (45 minutes each). In my experience, students doing the final exam usually write a good text and a mediocre/bad one, because they haven’t managed their time properly. Don’t let that happen to you.
