Discussion of the symbolism present in the movie One Week:
a)Canadian movie: Stanley cup-ice hockey, Tim Horton’s, universal healthcare system, interest in others, 3rd person narrator:our story even when written by ourselves, is told by someone else, lack of aggression, lack of conformity, honesty (boys with bikes), expansive scenery, the “extra-large” monuments, “O Canada” polite discussion, the singsong around the campfire, the northern lights, The humpback whale.
b)road movie: open road, motor bike, leather jacket, driving without plans, talking with strangers .
c)illness movie: denial, the national health care system, the need to countenance being a patient, dealing with family.
Comparison of the pace, voice and intentionality of One Week by comparing scenes from it to the road trip scenes of an American road movie Cameron Crowe's Elizabethtown (2005).
Introduction to the history of the population of the North American continent by questioning ans answering:
•How old are the national bounderies in the American continent? •19C
•What were the divisions before? •2 periods – the colonization period & pre-colonization
•Colonization: Fluid bounderies established by the colonizers. •However, in pre-colonization bounderies were climatic & geographic-vegetation: artic/sub-tundra/planes/ woodlands/coast.
Introduction to the first population of the continent - the Indians: crossing into North America from Asia by the Bering Straight following the giant bison, mastodon and mammoth – starting approx. 10,000 ago before the end of the ice age. - later followed by the Inuit.
Watched part 3 of the documental series Origins: A History of Canada.
Asked students to finish watching this episolde at home and to watch episode 5 & 8 as well.
