Course description (in language of instruction)
Students will acquire an understanding of Canadian culture through observation of its historical development and its geopolitical structure, as well as through critical analysis and discussion of its literature, cinema and visual arts. Therefore, in the first part of the program students will be presented with an overview of Canadian history and its geopolitical structure, looking at its progression from a diverse European colonial project to its independent existence despite the presence of a culturally aggressive neighbor. Particular attention will be paid to the beginnings of its contemporary multicultural project (1950-60s) and to its attempts to correct past errors through Parliamentary apologies and the TRC. As this foundation is being laid students will examine how these occurrences are reflected in and/or were propelled by its literature and other arts. While students will work together with set texts and films as part of the collective study associated with this Curricular Unit, they will also work individually with one novel/film/TV series following the research outlines presented in class.
