Apresentação: Programa; introdução à história, cultura e literatura irlandesas a partir de textos contemporâneos.

1. PROGRAMA

Objectivos / Aims:

Esta U.C. visa: 1) oferecer uma introdução à história, cultura e literatura irlandesas, na sua dupla articulação com a história da Grã-Bretanha e com a diáspora irlandesa; 2) introduzir os debates sobre narrativas identitárias que atravessam os Estudos Irlandeses e reflectem a estreita relação entre desenvolvimentos políticos e culturais na história da Irlanda; e 3) desenvolver nos alunos a capacidade de reflexão informada e crítica sobre textos literários na sua articulação com os respectivos contextos histórico-culturais, familiarizando-os com a rica herança cultural e literária irlandesa e com os diálogos éticos e estéticos que a percorrem.

This curricular unit aims to: 1) offer an introduction to Irish history, culture, and literature, both in terms of its links with Britain’s history and with the Irish diaspora; 2) introduce the ongoing identity debates within Irish Studies, as they reflect the close interaction between political and cultural developments in Irish history; and 3) foster students’ informed ability to think critically about literary texts within their respective historical framework, while providing an insight into Ireland’s rich cultural and literary heritage, and to the ethical and aesthetic dialogues that shape it.

Programa resumido / Syllabus:

Após uma visão panorâmica da história irlandesa, o programa centra-se em dois momentos chave na história e literatura irlandesas: o período conducente à independência e partição da Irlanda (1922) e o período dos Troubles (1968-98) até à actualidade, na Irlanda do Norte e na República da Irlanda.

1. Introdução à história, cultura e literatura irlandesas; relação entre Grã-Bretanha e Irlanda; cultura popular e cultura erudita; literatura e história.

2. Representações de identidade e(m) conflito na literatura irlandesa: da independência até à actualidade.

After an overview of Irish history, this course focuses on two key moments in Irish history: that leading up to Ireland’s independence and partition (1922) and that from the 1968-98 Troubles to the present, in Northern Ireland and in the Republic.

1. Introduction to Irish history, culture, and history; Anglo-Irish relations; the interplay between popular and high culture, literature and politics;

2. Representations of identity and conflict in Irish literature from independence (1922) to the 21st cent.

Ensino e avaliação / Teaching and assessment:

As metodologias adoptadas visam permitir aos alunos a aquisição de novos conhecimentos e o desenvolvimento pragmático de competências de reflexão crítica que contribuam para uma cidadania informada; incluem uma articulação entre textos e contextos tanto no ensino de conteúdos histórico-culturais como literários, o recurso a diferentes suportes (textuais e áudio/visuais) e a disponibilização de ferramentas úteis (cronologia e glossário). O ensino de conteúdos histórico-culturais é acompanhado pela análise de textos e outros materiais relevantes (documentários, filmes, baladas) e o ensino de conteúdos literários liga a prática de close reading à atenção aos contextos interpelados; recorre-se ainda a breves exercícios de escrita criativa como forma de apreender pela prática conceitos narratológicos como ponto de vista, focalização e voz.

A avaliação contínua consiste em: teste escrito 1: 30%; teste escrito 2 ou ensaio com discussão oral: 40%; qualidade da participação em aula: 30%.

The adopted methodologies aim to facilitate students’ acquisition of new knowledge while fostering the practical development of critical competences that may contribute to an informed citizenship; they include the articulation between text and context in the teaching both of cultural and of literary contents, resort to various media (literary & audio/visual) and provide useful tools (chronology & glossary). The teaching of historical and cultural contents is accompanied by the analysis of texts and other relevant materials (documentaries, films, ballads), and the teaching of literary contents engages in a context-aware practice of close reading; short exercises in creative writing provide students with a practical grasp of such narratological notions as point of view, focalisation and voice.

Continuous assessment consists in: written test 1: 30%; written test 2 or essay subject to oral discussion: 40%; participation in class and regular attendance: 30%.
