The expression of interpersonal meanings and the construction of tenor. Conversational maxims, cooperative principle, politeness principle and speech acts. Literal meaning vs pragmatic meaning, or congruent vs metaphorical meanings. Interpersonal grammatical metaphors. The correlation between speech act theory and genre theory.
