The unit aims at describing the English linguistic system and its stratification in different strata and seeks to ensure the acquisition of knowledge regarding the differences between grammatical description paradigms and between sentence-centered descriptions and contextual and textual-based ones. The theory of description of Systemic-Functional Grammar – which assumes that texts are the product of the context, whether situational or cultural, in which they are produced and interpreted – will be privileged as a valid description model for the analysis of any type of text, written or oral.

Assessment will consist of a mid-semester test (30%), a small expositive essay (an A4 page) on one of five possible contents to be defined in the first class (25%); and an analytical essay based on group work by three students, or, alternatively, a test of an analytical nature at the end of the semester (30%). Attendance (5%) and participation (10%) will also be considered for assessment. |
