Analysis of two published translations into Portuguese of an extract taken from The Virgin and the Gipsy by D.H. Lawrence. Particular attention paid to the so-called "square peg/round hole" phenomenon of the translator having made a mistake in interpretation of one word (bow) and thus having to re-shape the translation of the text to try to make sense of it. The result is an utter mess. And in this case it alters the meaning of and message of D.H. Lawrence's text.
