Presentation of the socio-cultural context of the seven year (French and Indian in the new world) war in Europe and the New World to help contextualize the sentiments de Crèvecoeur may have been feeling when writing "What then is an American" because of his French aristocratic background.

Discussion of the conditions in Jamestown for the first indentured workers and then discussion of the opening sections of Isenberg's White Trash within this context.
