In today's seminar, we discussed two main topics. First, from Nicomachean Ethics X and Eudemian Ethics VIII.3, we looked at the relationship between theoretical wisdom and eudaimonia. After reading Nicomachean Ethics VI last week, the main question was: how can contemplation have a central role in the good life, if the good life is focused on action? The second topic was the place of external goods in eudaimonia, for which we read a pair of articles written about Aristotle, by Julia Annas and Richard Kraut. We concluded the session with this topic, identifying various alternative interpretations of Aristotle as well as conceptual possibilities outside of Aristotle's system.

Today's seminar focused on Aristotle's conception of virtue. We discussed both the virtues of character and the virtues of thought, corresponding to the assigned readings of EE II–III and NE VI respectively. Both of these discussions engaged with an outline of Aristotle's understanding of the aspects of the soul, which was presented at the beginning of the session. Conversation around the virtues of character focused on Aristotle's idea of the mean, his concepts of decision and deliberation, and his outline of what is voluntary and involuntary. The virtues of thought prompted discussion around the difference between practical wisdom (prudence) and skill, and on the respective roles of virtue of character and practical wisdom in virtuous action. Finally, we discussed G. E. M. Anscombe's "Modern Moral Philosophy."
