Hegel's Philosophy of Art

24 Fevereiro 2025, 14:00 Filipa de Almeida Afonso

Where does the need for art spring from? Does art play a role in the inquiry into the truth? What is the difference between aesthetics and the philosophy of art? And what distinguishes artistic beauty from natural beauty? What is the relationship between form and content in a work of art? How does the artwork interact with time? And what does it mean to make art nowadays? Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel’s Lectures of Aesthetics will help us to discuss these questions. Specific attention will be paid to Hegel’s art system, the classical art form, and his controversial thesis of art’s past character.

In this lesson we are going to study some of the theses on aesthetics developed by Immanuel Kant in the Critique of Judgement. First of all, we will analyse the concept of aesthetics, in order to understand how philosophical considerations on aesthetics are incorporated into the general framework of Kantian philosophy. Secondly, we will deal with the concept of beauty. We will think about how it is included in Kant’s aesthetics and what features it has, according to this philosopher. To conclude, we will consider the concept of the fine arts and, in particular, Kant’s doctrine of genius.
