As origens do estudo sistematizado das questões referentes à comunicação entre culturas; a importância da sociologia, em especial de Georg Simmel e do seu conceito de 'estranho'; o entendimento de 'comunicação' em Simmel (Súmula); a importância de Robert E. Park no desenvolvimento da sociologia nos EUA e os seus conceitos de "distância social" e "homem marginal"; os conceitos de "heterofilia/ homofilia" (Lazarsfeld e Merton) e o de "cosmopolitismo" (Merton); o conceito de "etnocentrismo" de William G. Sumner ("ingroup/outgroup").
