Discussion of the opening 3 minutes (as the credits come up) of Richard Attenborough's Chaplin (1994). Analysis of the denotative elements (mise-en-scene, sound and picture editing) to demonstrate how these elements produce connotative meaning - the audiences feels sorry for Charlie as he removes his mask(s) - which will be necessary because of the relatively controversial scenes that will appear later in the film.
