Identificar o advento da Contemporaneidade no domínio político e institucional;

Caracterizar as tendências políticas em presença na Europa entre os finais do séc. XVIII e o advento da Grande Guerra;

Explicar os conceitos de nação no séc. XIX e o respectivo alcance;

Analisar as concepções de império surgidas na Europa do séc. XIX e o impacto na redefinição de fronteiras;

Compreender a constituição de impérios coloniais europeus.

 

5.Learning outcomes of the curricular unit

To identify the beginning of historical contemporarily in political and institutional aspects;

To characterize the political trends, present in Europe between the end of 18^th century and the Great War (1914-1919)

To explain the concepts of nation emerging in Europe during the 19^th century and its repercussions;

To analyse the conceptions of Empire conceived in Europe in the 19^th century and its impact on European borders;

To understand the constitution of European colonial empires.

 

6.Conteúdos programáticos

 

I A contemporaneidade e a História Europeia. Nação e Império entre os finais do séc. XVIII e o advento da Grande Guerra. Definições conceptuais e debates historiográficos.

II A Europa e a Revolução: a configuração política europeia em finais do séc. XVIII. As Revoluções e o seu impacto nas estruturas institucionais.

III Da Europa Restaurada e à afirmação das identidades nacionais: o mapa político europeu entre 1815 e 1848.

IV O Império e a Europa: caracterização dos sistemas imperiais europeus no séc. XIX. O confronto entre os Velhos e os Novos: as fórmulas imperiais europeias na segunda metade de Oitocentos.

V A Paz Armada: as Nações e os Impérios em confronto.

 

6.Syllabus

I The contemporarily and European History. The Nation and the Empire: since the late 18^th Century until the beginning of the Great War. The conceptual definitions and the historiographical approaches regarding the subject.

II Europe and Revolution: European political configuration at the end of 18^th century. The Revolutions and the institutional impacts.

III From the Europe of the Congress of Vienna to the rise of national identities: the European political map from 1815 to 1848.

IV Empire and Europe: characterization of European imperial systems during the 19^th century. The

Confrontation between the “Old” and the “New”: the European imperial formulas in the second half of the 19^th Century.

V The Armed Peace: the nations and the empires in dispute.

 

7.Demonstração da coerência dos conteúdos programáticos com os objectivos de aprendizagem da unidade curricular

Os conteúdos programáticos foram concebidos para corresponder às necessidades de aprendizagem dos estudantes quanto à evolução das estruturas políticas europeias ao longo do século XIX, tendo em consideração a complexidade do processo político ocorrido na Europa e as suas repercussões nas relações do Velho Continente com o Novo Mundo, o continente africano e asiático.

 

7. Demonstration of the syllabus coherence with the curricular unit's objectives

The syllabus was conceived to fulfil the needs of the students regarding the evolution of European political structures during the 19^th Century, considering the complexity of the historical process occurred in Europe and its repercussions in the relations between the Old Continent and the New World, the African and the Asian continents.

 

8.Metodologias de ensino (avaliação incluída)

As metodologias de ensino adoptadas combinam a exposição teórica para dar aos estudantes as linhas principais das matérias tratadas, a análise de fontes históricas e o debate promovido sobre as leituras dos estudantes (orientadas pelo professor).

Realização de uma prova de avaliação e de um trabalho de investigação; apresentação oral das conclusões.

 

8.Teaching methodologies (including evaluation)

The teaching methodologies adopted are a mixed combination between the teacher’s lecture, for providing students with the guidelines on the issues been treated, the analysis of historic sources and the debate promoted on the student’s readings (oriented by the teacher).

The evaluation is based in three key moments: an assessment and an investigation project which the students should submit in paper and in class.

 

9.Demonstração da coerência das metodologias de ensino com os objectivos de aprendizagem da unidade curricular

As metodologias de ensino adoptadas pretendem corresponder aos objectivos de aprendizagem selecionados. Considera-se crucial o cruzamento entre a exposição teórica de conhecimentos e o trabalho desenvolvido pelos estudantes, nas leituras recomendadas, nos debates nas aulas, ou ainda na aquisição de experiência no contacto e trabalho de análise crítica das fontes históricas.

 

 

9.Demonstration of the coherence between the teaching methodologies and the learning outcomes

The teaching methodologies adopted aim to satisfy the learning outcomes selected. It’s considered crucial the encounter between the theoretical exposition in class and the students’ work on selected readings, on debates promoted in class or on the experience in handling critical analysis of historical sources.
