Academic publishing

18 Novembro 2019, 15:00 Marta Pacheco Pinto

This session took place on Monday, 18 November 2019, in order to compensate for the seminar session scheduled for Wednesday, 21 November, which the instructor was not be able to deliver for being away at a conference. Carrying on discussing academic publishing, this session was specifically focused on peer review (benefits and drawbacks; different kinds of peer review; handling reviewers' feedback; responding to reviewers' comments, etc.), open-access policy and open-access scientific repositories (namely, self-archiving).

Oral presentations (evaluation)

13 Novembro 2019, 15:00 Marta Pacheco Pinto

This session was devoted to students' presentations. Two students delivered each a 20-minute paper and three students presented each a research poster (with a 5-minute introduction) on an aspect of their PhD research that was followed by peer discussion (up to 15 minutes).

Publishing and metrics tutorial

6 Novembro 2019, 15:00 Marta Pacheco Pinto

This session served as an introduction to bibliometrics, citation indexes, and journal rankings as well as to both journal and book publication. At the end, students were asked to build a list of the five most important journals and publishers in their disciplinary field using the abstracting, indexing and citation databases explored during the session.

Scientific review articles

30 Outubro 2019, 15:00 Marta Pacheco Pinto

This session was dedicated to scientific review articles: what they are useful for, what kind of information they usually provide (literature review vs. book review), how to produce a good scientific review. Students were given two book reviews for in-class reading and discussion. The analysis of these two different reviews was interspersed with a Kahoot quiz to test and assess knowledge about good practices when writing scientific reviews.

Paper and poster presentations (skills and visual aids)

23 Outubro 2019, 15:00 Marta Pacheco Pinto

This session was focused on research communication and presentation, specifically on paper and poster presentations. We discussed several typologies of paper presentation and the skills needed for an effective paper presentation, including how to prepare and handle visual aids (namely PowerPoint). With regard to posters, some examples of non-effective research posters were provided for students to comment, and a set of good practice recommendations was given. Students were also provided with useful links to poster templates and with information as to the most appropriate design programmes for the creation of research posters.
