Oral presentations
11 Novembro 2020, 15:00 • Marta Pacheco Pinto
Students made poster presentations of their final essays. Each presentation was followed by peer discussion of up to 15 minutes.
Publishing and bibliometrics
4 Novembro 2020, 15:00 • Marta Pacheco Pinto
This session served as an introduction to bibliometrics (citations, journal impact factor, and h-index) as well as to both journal and book publication. At the end, students were asked to build a list of the five most important journals and publishers in their disciplinary field using the abstracting and indexing databases explored during the session.
Scientific reviews
28 Outubro 2020, 15:00 • Marta Pacheco Pinto
This session was dedicated to scientific reviews, namely to literature and book reviews: who reads them and why; what they are useful for; what kind of information they usually provide; good practices on how to write scientific reviews. Students were provided with samples of book reviews for in-class reading and discussion.
Writing abstracts and bionotes; presenting papers and posters
21 Outubro 2020, 15:00 • Marta Pacheco Pinto
The first part of the session was on how to write effective (conference) abstracts and bionotes illustrated with practical examples. Students’ own bionotes were also collectively discussed.
The second part of the session was focused on research communication and presentation, specifically on paper and poster presentations. We discussed several typologies of paper presentation and the skills needed for an effective oral presentation, including how to prepare and handle visual aids (namely PowerPoint) and tips for successful message delivery (body language, clarity of speech, etc.). With regard to posters, examples of effective and non-effective research posters were provided, and a set of good practice recommendations was given. Students were also provided with useful links to poster templates and with information as to the most appropriate design programmes for the creation of research posters.
Referencing styles and conference organization
14 Outubro 2020, 15:00 • Marta Pacheco Pinto
The session was divided into two parts. The first part was on citation styles used in the Humanities (namely MLA, the Chicago Manual of Style, MHRA, Harvard, the 405 Portuguese norm) as well as on citation management software. The second section of the programme (on research activities, communication and outputs) was introduced in the second part of the class. The PhD candidates worked collaboratively in the creation of a checklist of procedures for conference organization. We then discussed how to write a CFP and build a budget and explored potential funding schemes.
