Assignment 1) 'Cat in the rain' by Ernest Hemingway: Understanding character construction

Read Hemingway's short story (pages 30-32) and the questions under 'Understanding character construction' (page 32).

In an essay of around 350 words, discuss how character is constructed in the short story.

Quotes used to illustrate /back up your point of view are, of course, excluded from the word count. Since this is a formal essay, please remember not to use contracted verb forms.

Assignment 1 is due on Monday, 16th March not later than 6 p.m.

Assignment 2) Character construction

Use a photograph of your own choosing as a prompt to create a character. Write a story /a scene where that character plays a pivotal role. Your first line is

            Loneliness sharpens the senses.

Assignment 2 is due on Wednesday, 18th March not later than 6 p.m. Please include the photograph you have used.

Assignment 3) Discussing rules for character construction

Read the two articles 'Rules are made to be broken' by John Rechy and 'On Rules of

Writing, or, Riffing on Rechy' by Ursula Le Guin.

 

In an essay of about 500 words, discuss the (ir)relevance of complying with rules when you are writing fiction.

 

Please support your opinion with quotes from the two above-mentioned articles, or any other piece of writing you deem relevant. Please provide your sources when quoting.
