The general theme of the course is The Hero Archetype. Using Joseph Campbell’s book The Hero with a Thousand Faces as a core text, we’ll analyse and explore the stages of the mythical hero’s journey as it plays out in a variety of films – such as Star Wars, The Matrix, The Lord of the Rings, The Lion King, The Wizard of Oz – as well as in a range of narrative texts (including JK Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone).

 

In addition, the course will focus on the Grammar component of the Cambridge C2 Proficiency exam, guiding students towards a pass in the Reading and Use of English exam paper at that level.

 

Evaluation will have four parts, all equally weighted:

 

A piece of analytical writing done in class	25%
A piece of creative writing done at home	25%
An oral presentation	25%
A Grammar Test	25%
