Students discussed the outcomes of their close reading of the first letter in the novel The Perks of Being a Wallflower.  

Then we viewed the opening of the film to compare how the scene is set in the film,

Literary close readings

Students carried out a literary close reading of W.B: Yeats's poem "The balloon of the Mind" and the opening paragraphs of William Faulkner's short story "A Rose for Emily" following the guidelines in the course book.

These exercises were carried out in small groups followed by a general student discussion of the outcome of the readings. 
An example of a complete exercise was offered to students at the end of class to provide them with a guideline if they wish to do a literary close reading for their oral presentation.

Class led discussion of Norman Holland's article on how people process fictional narratives "Spider-Man? Sure! The neuroscience of suspending disbelief"

This led to a more extended discussion on how information is processed and fact checked and how people can really believe false information, even if this is unfounded.
