Review of texts in manual on The Mad Woman upstairs and Wild Sargasso Sea. Answered question in manual.
Introduced students to the concepts of visual literacy as applicable to film still analysis - referred to Timothy Corrigan's suggestions of the use of this technique in interpreting narrative film from A Brief Introduction to Writing about Film (Chapter 4 in manual).
Started watching The Talented Mr. Ripley applying visual literacy techniques and also to illustrate how the director used oblique foreshadowing in the introductory section - placing essential elements of the plot development between the credits of the film. In this way viewers are subconsciously "warned" about plot twists. These are still surprising when they happen, but they do not feel out of keeping with the possibilities of the plot line.
The viewing of The Talented Mr. Ripley is also in preparation of the reading and discussion of Miranda Fricker's chapter on "Testimonial Injustice" as this is one of the films she uses to exemplify her theory.
