Screening and discussion of Crystal Emery's film  Black Women in Medicine (2016) as part of the Portraits from America II film cycle. with the presence of Consular staff from the U:S: embassy

Discussion of the technical aspects of documentary film ( Black Women in Medicine) as opposed to narrative fiction films (the type of film we have been looking at so far). Particular attention was placed on: narrative arc, presentation of shots, point-of.view and editing.

Finished the discussion of the chapter "Narrative Knowing" and Norman Holland's essay "The Mind and the Book".


General discussion of the influence of  stories in the formation of conceptual frameworks of thought - specific discussion of the representation of black women in medicine in the USA as presented by the popular TV series  Grey's Anatomy in preparation for the screening of Crystal Emery's documental film Black Woman in Medicine (2016). 

Began the screening of George Cukor's film Gaslight (1944) to offer an illustration of the manner in which  the arts can offer illustration of phenonena which can then enter the regular vocabulary of ordinary people. Because of the example this film offers of intimidation or psychological abuse, where false information is presented to the victim, making them doubt their own memory, perception and quite often, their sanity this phenonena became known as gaslighting. We will continue this screening on 19th March.

Review and generalised discussion of the topics presented in the last class -  the societial changes resulting from the deconstruction of the collective narrative of traditional society and highlights how this has impacted on the construction of individual and collective narratives in modern and post-modern societies. - and looked at how the external narratives offered by the arts can help for both collective and individual narratives.
Student led discussion of academic reading that had been set for this class: the chapter "Narrative Knowing" from John McLeod's book  Narrative and Psychotherapy.

Discussion of the chapter "Psychotherapy, Culture and Storytelling: How They Fit Together" from John McLeod's book Narrative and Psychotherapy. 


This chapter discusses the societial changes resulting from the deconstruction of the collective narrative of traditional society and highlights how this has impacted on the construction of individual and collective narratives in modern and post-modern societies.
