AIMS

In line with the CEFR descriptors, students of C1.1. level are expected to be able to understand a wide range of demanding texts and recognise implicit meaning. They should be able to express themselves fluently and spontaneously and use language flexibly and effectively for social, academic and professional purposes. Students should also be capable of producing clear, well-structured, detailed text on complex subjects, showing controlled use of organisational patterns, connectors and cohesive devices.

 

SYLLABUS OVERVIEW

The syllabus will be based on the following areas:

Essay writing

Students will be encouraged to develop criticality in their writing and will learn to structure a five- paragraph persuasive essay with particular emphasis on the features of an introduction, body paragraph and conclusion.

Critical analysis

Critical analysis of a play and short film.

Debates

Based on the Oxford-Union style, students will develop their oral skills by participating in controlled class debates. The aim of this activity is to promote students’ critical awareness and ability to construct persuasive arguments.

 

STUDY MATERIALS

All the course materials will be uploaded onto Moodle. The teacher will inform the students of the material required for each class as the course progresses.

 

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

·       Essay: 40%

·       Debate: 30%

·       Written assignment: 20%

·       Attendance and class participation: 10%

 

 

REQUIREMENTS

Having successfully completed English Strong Vantage (B2.2) or having been placed in English Proficiency (C1.1) as a result of a placement test done at the beginning of the academic year.
