Introduction to writing descriptive texts + discussion of defining elements of Portuguese culture

16 Outubro 2017, 12:00 Cecília Maria Beecher Martins

Class led discussion on the defining elements of Portuguese culture - this was a speaking exercises carried out to encouage the development of a discourse on cultural perspectives of a community (both in terms of vocabulary and creation of critical thinking).

This exercise was carried out for 2 reasons - first to enhance oral skills and second to help students understand that when you live in a certain community you feel your experience is common to all those who live in that country. Students have been reading Paul Thoreau's Deep South and have been surprised that the author seems to take a long time to understand another part of his own country. This exericise was to help students comprehend why this may be.

Presentation of the purpose of descriptive texts in fictional writing (descriptions of characters, locations and moods act as anchora and impulsors of narrative texts)
Discussed the importance of seeing and writing seperate seeing sentences. Students did exercises on pages 46 & 47 of manual.
