"Tony's story" by Leslie Marmon Silko continued: discussion of the short story by addressing the following topics, (a) plot summary; (b) depiction of the main characters; (c) references to Native American culture and customs; (d) references to mainstream American society and the modern world; (e) traits associated with myths, legends, fairy-tales and fables. For this activity the class was split into several groups and each group was assigned one question from page 27 which they should discuss and then answer in writing.

Literary Analysis 
1. Silko often uses Native American myths and legends in her stories. Look at the opening of "Tony’s Story". Do you recognize anything it has in common with myths? Do you recognize any other traits that are often associated with myths, legends and fairy-tales? 
2. What is the main plot in the story? 
3. Describe the mood in the story. 
4. Find connotations that you associate with Native Americans in the story. 
5. Find references that you associate with mainstream American society/Western culture. 
6. Interpret Tony’s dream. Is the dream used as foreshadowing? How does this dream contribute to the tension in the short story? 
7. Character analysis: how is Tony depicted throughout the short story? 
8. Character analysis: how is Leon depicted throughout the short story?
