SYLLABUS
1. OBJECTIVES
This course aims at:
· consolidating English structures;
· improving the students’ ability to understand and interpret literary texts and appreciate their literary value;
· expanding students’ range of vocabulary;
· enabling students to both communicate spontaneously and at ease with other fluent/proficient speakers of the language; and
· developing students’ writing skills.
These aims will be achieved by means of specific written and oral activities, which will serve as the basis for continuous assessment. These include:
· Reading: short stories, articles, and a novella to be discussed in class and studied for concepts and vocabulary;· In class discussions and exercises;
· In-class composition about novella;
· Out of class composition strongly set in a place; and

4. CLASSROOM POLICIES
4.1. Plagiarism is the act of presenting someone else’s ideas or work either in written or spoken work. It will not be tolerated. Work found to be plagiarized will immediately receive a grade of zero. Make sure you are well acquainted with the FLUL Assessment Regulations with regard to fraud and plagiarism.
4.2. Attendance and Punctuality
· Any absence must be justified up to 10 days after a class has been missed.
· Students are responsible for preparing for the following class, following an absence. Ask a colleague or consult the online class summaries. Do not ask email you teacher about this as she may not be able to answer in a timely fashion.
· Classes start five minutes after the set hour. Being late not only disturbs class but is also a sign of disrespect for your classmates and your teacher.
4.3. Mobile phones
· Please turn off your mobile phone at the beginning of every class and keep it away from your desk unless your teacher asks you to consult the internet.
· Mobile phone use during tests is strictly prohibited, and any infraction will justify a grade of 0%.

4.5. Special dispensations
Allowance may be made in extreme cases for absences or late delivery of work in the case of medical issues, personal or medical problems arising from disability, extreme personal and family problems, force majeure, and work-related problems.
· A student should contact the teacher at the earliest opportunity if they cannot meet the deadline and ask for permission for late submission in advance of the deadline. The student’s request should be accompanied or followed by medical evidence or other documentation where appropriate.
· Students will then be informed of whether their work will be accepted after the deadline.
