Presentation of course content and calendar with particular emphasis on methodology, expected learning outcomes for this subject and evaluation methods.

  • Grading and Assessment:

Assessment will be continuous, and students will be required to perform a variety of in-class activities (both written and oral), as well as prepare a longer assignment to be presented orally. 

The assessment criteria are as follows:  

Two short in-class written assignments:  20% (10% each)

Research project on one of the themes of the programme: 25% 

Written Test: 35%

Attendance, course work and participation: 20%

16 March: Submission of written research project proposal

23 March: 2nd Writing assignment

16 April: Written Test

NB:

1. Students have been advised to enroll in English B2.2-TP 8 [20/21), so as to download the Student's Book, as well as other supplementary material that will be made available throughout the semester.

2. Students are required to upload a photo in their profiles in Fenix and campus/edu accounts to make it easier for me to identify and get to know them.

Assessment & Programme


This course aims at:

§  consolidating English structures;

§  improving the students’ ability to understand and interpret literary texts and appreciate their literary value;

§  enabling students to both communicate spontaneously and at ease with other fluent/proficient speakers of the language;

§  allowing students to develop clear, detailed descriptions on a wide range of subjects in most fields of interest as well as explain a viewpoint on a non-topical issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options;

§  developing students’ writing and argumentative skills.

 

1.1. These aims will be achieved by means of specific written and oral activities, which will serve as the basis for continuous assessment. These activities will include:

§  Reading: Short stories, newspaper & magazine articles will be selected for in-class discussions and activities. A novel will also be read independently and discussed in class;

§  Academic Writing: Descriptive, literary & ‘for and against’ essays;

§  Speaking: Expressing and defending viewpoints on previously selected topics in formal in-house debates;

§  Listening: Talks, documentaries and short videos on relevant topics will be screened and discussed.

 

2. ASSESSMENT AND GRADING SYSTEM

Assessment will be continuous, and will consist of the following:

§  In-House Essay:                                  25%

§  Written test:                                      30%

§  In-house debate:                               25%

§  Attendance & Participation:            20%

 

2.1. Dates for the In-House Essay:               March 10 or March 17

 

2.2. Dates for the Oxford-Style Debates:    

March 3 | March 24 | April 9 | April 23 | May 12 & 14

 

NB:

§  Each group will be assigned one of the dates to do their in-house debate;

If you do not come to class on the day you are meant to do your in-house essay or participate in the group debate, you will get 0.

 

2.3. Dates for the Written Test:       April 28 or May 5

§  The course book will be made available at the Green photocopy shop and online (see ULisboa’s e-learning website).
